It’s a charming version of the song where the piano player throws in the “New York, New York” riff in the beginning. You can tell Sammy hears it, too. He gives a smile as if he’s in on a joke with musicians that he’s trying to do with “Hello Detroit” what Sinatra did with “New York, New York”. After the performance, Sammy apologizes to Detroiters for mispronouncing Belle Isle and asks for permission to continue to eat barbecue on Hastings Street. ‘
On this day in 1990 Sammy Davis, Jr. succumbed to cancer and went thru the Motown Gates of Heaven.
