Protesters Want Protection for Boys Too
Dr. Jumana Nagarwala will be in court on Monday, April 17th for a detention hearing at 1:00 pm as the very first prosecution in the United States for female genital mutilation continues at the U.S. District Courthouse in downtown Detroit.
Protestors will be in front of the Courthouse at 12:00 pm on Monday to make the point that genital mutilation doesn’t just happen to girls. The genitals of 49,000 baby boys are being cut in Michigan every year at the request of parents, denying these boys the right to intact and normal genitals.
Dr. Nagarwala and all other Michigan physicians are legally allowed to cut the genitals of boys simply at the request of their parents, without any medical necessity. However, the slightest cutting of girls’ genitals, regardless of religious belief, is a 5-year felony. (Title 18 United States Code paragraph 116).
“The genitals of both girls AND boys needs to be protected from the harm of any genital cutting practice,” says Norm Cohen, Executive Director of NOCIRC of Michigan. “Michigan has one of the highest rates of circumcision in the world. This unnecessary custom violates a child’s right to bodily integrity and normal functions.”
In Michigan, 83% of newborn boys are circumcised at a cost exceeding $11 million per year. Male circumcision is driven by the same reasons used to justify female genital mutilation: tradition, cleanliness, appearance, medical myths, and sexual moderation.
Polls indicate that most parents decide to cut their sons for reasons not related to health care, but physicians profit by promoting it and convincing insurance companies to pay for it.
Cohen adds, “Doctors and hospitals profit by perpetuating the myth that infant circumcision is health care. It is not. It is a harmful custom that removes a normal, functioning part of a child’s genitals at the request of parents.”
