Tri-County Alliance applauds State Board of Ed decision to reject assigning letter grades to schools
LANSING — The following is a statement from Tri-County Alliance Executive Director Mark Burton on the State Board of Education’s decision not to assign letter grades to Michigan schools.
“We are pleased the State Board of Education and state superintendent have listened to the advice of front-line education leaders by rejecting the failed concept of giving letter grades to schools,” said Mark Burton, executive director of the Tri-County Alliance. “There has been bipartisan, broad-based opposition from the school community, state lawmakers, business groups and even realtors to labeling schools with letter grades. We applaud the superintendent for moving to a dashboard approach, which will be a more effective tool for preparing students for higher achievement, college and careers.”
The Tri-County Alliance for Public Education is a coalition of education leaders committed to fighting for strong K-12 schools across Michigan. Comprised of Superintendents from every district in Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties, they are collectively responsible for educating nearly 600,000 students (approximately 40 percent of the statewide K-12 population).
