Reese WigginsThe Detroit Lions have decided to shake things up a little bit and make a change at wide receiver, waiving wide receiver Naaman Roosevelt and claiming rookie wide receiver Reese Wiggins on waivers from New England according to reports.

Although it will be nice to see another free face rookie during training camp, I feel at this point, Wiggins is just another wide receiver, who will be competing for one of the last receiver spots in training camp. Now, that’s not to say that he shouldn’t be taken seriously because he could very well surprise people in training camp and possibly compete for one of the final spots on the Lions’ 53-man roster.

If you go back to his time at East Carolina, you will see that Wiggins was a solid receiver. The 5-foot-11 and 185-pounder, earned All-Conference USA Honorable Mention as a senior in 2013 after finishing with 26 receptions for 372 yards and four touchdowns. Before graduating, Wiggins finished his career at East Carolina with 80 receptions for 1,012 yards and eight touchdowns.

After looking back at his film from college, I can honestly say that Wiggins does possess the reliable hands to be a good receiver. However, the main thing that sticks out about Wiggins, is his great acceleration ability. In fact, according to Josh Katzenstein of the Detroit News, Wiggins ran an impressive 40 yard dash during his pro day back in March.

He [Wiggins] also ran a 4.37-second 40-yard dash during his pro day in March and participated in the Super Regional Combine at Ford Field in April.

Nevertheless, it’s to early in the game, to say whether Wiggins will or won’t make Lions the roster. Coming into camp he will have a chance to make the final roster but if for whatever reason he doesn’t, he could still make the Lions practice squad and continue to develop. Only time will tell.
