Ray Buford

Southfield (Mich.) junior defensive back and wide receiver Ray Buford, may have missed most of his junior football season with a knee injury but he certainly hasn’t let that hold him back from being recruited by top colleges because since getting back on the field, the talented dual-threat athlete hasn’t missed a beat. In February, Buford was named the Overall MVP of the Core 6 Athletes Showcase that took place in Cincinnati, Ohio. Then on Saturday, Buford return to the state of Ohio to visit the University of Cincinnati and when I asked him how he enjoyed his visit, his answer was simple but filled with energy.

“I loved it up here at Cincinnati!” Buford said.” While I was there, I got a chance to watch practice and talk with cornerbacks coach Steve Clinkscale and head coach Tommy Tubberville. Overall I love the atmosphere and the winning tradition at Cincinnati.

Although, Buford doesn’t yet hold an offer from Cincinnati, he says he feels an offer is close.

“I feel like an offer is close with Cincinnati, it’s just a matter of how soon.” Buford replied.

At this point, there is no doubt that three-star recruit stock is constantly growing. As of right now Buford holds offers from Boston College, Eastern Michigan, Ohio, Toledo and Western Michigan and with growing interest from Michigan State, Purdue, Pittsburgh and Minnesota, there is no question that more offers are on the way for the highly touted athlete.

However, while Buford admits that he is enjoying the recruiting process, he states there is in no clear favorite on his list right now and he is in no rush to commit.

“I’m loving every second of the recruiting process!” Buford said. “Every school I have visited so far, has shown me a lot of love. I appreciate every school that  has offered me so far and I like that they all had enough guts and faith to take a chance on me!”

“I don’t have any key favorites right now so I would have to say it’s an even race so far. When it comes to committing to a school, it’s all about how I connect with coaches, academics and how I feel overall about the university. I’m not going to rush the process, I am going to continue weighing my options and I will make my decision when I’m ready.”

In the meantime, Buford added that he plans to continue visiting schools and getting ready for his senior season with the Southfield Blue Jays.

“I have upcoming visits to Michigan State and Pittsburgh, so I am definitely looking forward to those.” Buford replied. “Other than that, I am really working on becoming a better football player. Right now I’m working on toning up my body and since people say ‘speed kills’, getting faster has been a main goal for me as well. Going into my senior season, my only focus is to win a State championship!”

So as you can see, Buford has a busy schedule ahead of him and I don’t know about you but I think the future certainly looks bright for him. So don’t be surprised if you hear his name more as the off-season continues and as the 2014 football season gets closer.
