20526658_BG2CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -A Christmas gift by a well-known Chicago pastor has landed former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick in hot water.

FOX 32 News and our sister station in Detroit have learned that Kilpatrick may have to go back to jail for violating his probation, after he allegedly failed to report the money to authorities.

Kilpatrick was caught on a Wal-Mart security camera last December, counting out $2,000 in cash he just received from a wire transfer. The man who sent him the money? Pastor Corey Brooks, a prodigious fundraiser and growing leader in Chicago’s religious community.

“He didn’t render any sort of work for it. It was a gift. It was a benevolence gift,” Brooks insists. “It was a Christmas gift.”

Brooks says he wired Kilpatrick the money after Kilpatrick sent him this letter pleading for help.

Pastor Brooks did nothing illegal by sending Kilpatrick the money, which he says came from church funds. But Kilpatrick is in trouble because he owes hundreds of thousands of dollars in restitution.

“Part of his parole conditions are that he has to report any income, gifts he receives to us during the month. The problem is he reported zero dollars in income, zero dollars in gifts in the month of December.”

Michigan authorities are now investigating whether Kilpatrick violated his parole by not reporting the money, which could land him back in prison.

“I would tell the people of Detroit that I’m a pastor and I help a lot of people. I help pastors, I help preachers, I help politicians, I help parents and that’s just what I do,” Brooks says.

Brooks says he wouldn’t be surprised if the former mayor sent similar pleas to other African American clergy around the country. Michigan officials say they will be looking into whether Kilpatrick received other gifts he did not report.
