Shakeups Continue! Detroit Hires New Financial Manager Of Schools

DETROIT — Gov. Rick Snyder announced that former General Motors Corporation executive Roy Roberts would become the new emergency financial manager for Detroit Public Schools, replacing Robert Bobb.

ClickOnDetroit.com reports:

Roberts will have broader powers granted through a recent state law, including the ability to toss out union contracts as part of cost-cutting efforts. His contract is for one year and pays him $250,000.

Robert Bobb: DPS class size will not grow to 60 students

Robert Bobb, the emergency financial manager for DPS, today attempted to quell some of the fear resulting from his deficit elimination plan that calls for placing as many as 62 kids in a class by 2014.

In response to a Free Press inquiry, Bobb said that classes will not balloon to 60 or more children per class. He did not say how large they might become, however.

Deadlines given in Plan for Detroit Public School Cuts

The Michigan Department of Education gave Detroit Public Schools deadlines this month for moving forward with a deficit-elimination plan.

The plan calls for closing 70 schools by 2013, increasing high school class sizes to more than 60 students, and outsourcing and consolidating services with the city and the countywide education agency between this year and 2014.
