Deadly Gas Explosion Kills At Least Five In Allentown, Pennsylvania

ALLENTOWN, Pa. — Fire officials say three people died and two remain missing after a natural gas explosion rocked a downtown neighborhood in eastern Pennsylvania last night.

Allentown fire Chief Robert Scheirer says the victims in the blast range in age from 4 months to 79 years old. Scheirer said today that emergency workers are still searching for two people.

Six people had been reported missing earlier, but Scheirer says officials believe one of them was not home at the time of the blast.

The blaze burned for hours while utility crews worked to shut off the gas that fed the flames.

MyFOXDetroit.com – Mass casualties and multiple injuries were reported Sunday after a huge explosion at a Connecticut power plant, police confirmed to Fox News.

Al Santostefano, the deputy fire marshal in Middletown, told The Associated Press the explosion happened at 11:17 a.m. Sunday at the Kleen Energy Systems plant there and portions of the building blew away.

“There are bodies everywhere,” a witness told the Hartford Courant.

Medical rescue personnel told the newspaper there were at least two fatalities, and at least 100 people injured — including four in critical condition. The paper also reported that as many as 20 ambulances were on the scene.

Santostefano said 50 workers were inside the building at the time of the explosion.

Dozens of witnesses said black smoke could be seen for miles.

A resident of East Hampton, Conn. — directly across the river from the plant — told Fox 61 that he heard a loud booming explosion at about 11 a.m.

Immediately afterward, the witness said his house shook, leading him to believe someone had driven a car into his home, the station reported. The incident reportedly interrupted services at a nearby East Hampton church.

Police are advising everyone to stay away from the area.

The power plant was reportedly undergoing construction at the time of the explosion, and authorities said they do not know what was behind the blast.

FOX 2 reports the fire started Monday night on the city's west side in the lower level of a duplex. The Detroit Fire Department says an upstairs neighbor smelled smoke and discovered the fire. The department says the neighbor found one man inside and firefighters found the other. The identities of the two men weren't immediately released. The cause of the fire was under investigation.... Memphis, Tn – Shelby County District Attorney Bill Gibbons announced Tuesday that the state Grand Jury for Shelby County had returned an indictment against a Memphis woman whose two young children died from injuries sustained in a house fire last month.

Melodia Dunn, 22, has been indicted on two counts of aggravated child neglect or endangerment (a non-parolable class A felony) and two counts of reckless homicide (a class D felony).
According to the first two counts of the indictment, Dunn did unlawfully and knowingly, other than by accidental means, neglect or endanger Ladereon Dunn and Cartareon Dunn.

The third and fourth counts of the indictment state that Dunn did unlawfully and recklessly kill her two children.

Ladereon Dunn, 3, died on October 19, the same day his home, a duplex located at 1240 Effie, caught fire. His brother, Cartareon, 2, died October 26 from injuries sustained during the fire.

“I have been outraged by this incident and know the public has been, as well. We will seek to hold the defendant accountable for her actions,” said District Attorney Gibbons. “If found guilty on all counts, Ms. Dunn is looking at a long prison sentence.”

Dunn is being held in the Shelby County Jail on $250,000 bond. An arraignment date has not been set.

UPDATE: As per an MPD release, the facts of the case were presented to the Shelby County District Attorney General’s office and they have declined to file criminal charges at this time. The case will be completed and submitted to the District Attorney General’s Grand Jury section for a final review.

5 Girls Burnt To Death At Jamaican Correctional Facility

Five girls were burnt to death and thirteen injured when fire broke out at a Correctional Centre in Alexandra, St Ann, Jamaica, on Friday night.

Prime Minister Bruce Golding has given instructions immediately to relocate the inmates of the Armadale Juvenile Correctional Centre.

Ten of the girls who were injured and three with secondary burns have been moved to the Kingston Public Hospital.

According to a GIS release, Golding said a Commission of Enquiry will be ordered to determine exactly what took place. He said retired Court of Appeal president, Paul Harrison, has agreed to be the sole Commissioner and the Commission will begin working once the instruments have been signed by the Governor General.

Meanwhile, Golding said security at the centre has been beefed up and additional correctional officers and police have been put in place. Government will also be taking care of the funeral expenses.
