In the latest contentious episode of Terry’s career, video posted on the Internet appeared to show Terry directing a racial slur at Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand during Sunday’s game.

QPR assessed the matter for two days before turning to The English Football Association.

The FA said in a statement it has received a “complaint relating to an alleged incident of racist abuse” during the game and will look into it. The Metropolitan Police also said it was “notified of an incident” that is being “assessed.”

QPR chairman Tony Fernandes said “we will provide our players with our unequivocal support when alleged incidents like this occur.”

Terry said the phrase the footage appeared to show him saying was being taken out of context.

“I thought Anton was accusing me of using a racist slur against him,” he said after the match. “I responded aggressively, saying that I never used that term.”

After the FA investigation was opened, Terry released a statement saying he welcomed the inquiry and looked forward “to clearing my name as soon as possible.”

The complaint came during English soccer’s anti-racism week, which highlights the progress made since abuse marred the game in the 1970s and ’80s. And it came just a week after the FA started an investigation into whether Liverpool striker Luis Suarez racially abused Manchester United’s black defender Patrice Evra during a Premier League game.

“This is worrying and potentially very damaging,” said Herman Ouseley, chairman of English soccer’s anti-racism group, Kick It Out. “What happens at the top end of the game has an impact at grass-roots level and at parks pitches across the country.”

The issue could again throw into question Terry’s suitability as England captain. He regained the armband only this year after being stripped of it by England manager Fabio Capello in February 2010. He allegedly had an affair with the former girlfriend of Wayne Bridge, then his teammate with Chelsea and the national team.

Rio Ferdinand, the older brother of Anton and Terry’s longtime defense partner for England, took over as captain only to relinquish the position 13 months later.

Terry also was fined by the club after he and three teammates drunkenly abused American guests at a hotel the day after the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

5. Watts Riot, 1965

In 1965, three members of a black family in Los Angeles were locked up by police for protesting the arrest of their brother. Fueled by unemployment, poor schools and housing discrimination, discontent in the Watts neighborhood erupted and people began to loot, vandalize, and clash with police and white motorists. The riot lasted for six days. Thirty-four people were killed, 1,032 injured, and 3,952 arrested. Police commissioner, William Parker, fueled the fires by saying that the rioters acted “like monkeys in a zoo”

A California gubernatorial commission found the causes of the riot to be high unemployment, poor schools, and other inferior living conditions.

4. Detroit Riots, 1967

In 1967, police raided a after hours party in Detroit and tried to arrest 82 people who were celebrating the homecoming of two soldiers from Vietnam. This resulted in a neighborhood protest that lead to looting, vandalism and arson. Once again the National Guard was called in after five days of rioting. At the end of the chaos, 43 people were dead, 1189 injured, and over 7000 were arrested.

The Detroit Free Press cited the causes of the riot as racism, economic inequality, and poor housing.

3. Notting Hill Riots England, 1976

Riots with roots in racism and police brutality are not unique to the U.S. In 1976, during the West Indian carnival in Notting Hill, London, West Indian youths revolted against arbitrary mass arrests and began clashing with the police, throwing bottles and other objects at police and their vehicles. The causes for the riot are often cited as an occupational police presence and unemployment among the West Indian youths.

2. Los Angeles Riots, 1992

One of the most prominent riots of the 20th Century was the 1992 civil insurrection sparked by the acquittal of four officers in the videotaped beating of Black motorist Rodney King. After the officers were acquitted, African Americans began to protest at the Los Angeles County courthouse and LAPD headquarters. A large group of Black citizens convened at the corner of Florence and Normandie confronted a group of officers, who then retreated because they were outnumbered. By the evening the crowd on Florence and Normandie began looting and attacking white motorists, including truck driver Reginald Denny.

Looting, arson and violence continued and eventually the National Guard was called in. The riots wound up killing 53 people and causing more the one billion dollars worth of damage.

The Christopher Commission sited the causes of the L.A. Riots as high unemployment, racial profiling and police brutality.

1. French Riots, 2005

In October of 2005, two teenagers in a Paris suburb were chased by police into a power station where the boys were electrocuted. Protests and unrest subsequently ensued. Civil unrest spread to poor housing projects in other parts of France including violence, arson and clashes with police.

Almost 9,000 cars were burned and 3,000 people were arrested and 126 policemen and firefighters were injured. The BBC listed the causes of the riot as unemployment and discrimination against immigrants.

In the ad for Antonio Federici gelato, which ran in Look magazine, two chiseled men in black cassocks and clerical collars embrace “in a seductive pose as if they were about to kiss passionately,” the ASA said in a statement.

One of the men is wearing rosary and grips a spoon. The other cradles a small container of caffe espresso-flavor gelato. Text in the ad reads, “We Believe in Salivation.”

Jared Shreeve, a lab assistant at Seven Kings High School in the United Kingdom tricked a student into wearing a chloroform-soaked mask.

Sayeda Rahman, 17, was persuaded to cover her face after being told there had been an oil spill in the school’s chemical storeroom and she needed to protect herself from the fumes.

But Jared Shreeve had doused the mask in chloroform – an anaesthetic which causes loss of consciousness and often leads to death if inhaled. After vomiting, the schoolgirl passed out and her pulse rate dropped to a dangerously low level before paramedics managed to revive her.

Jailing Shreeve for two and a half years yesterday, Judge William Kennedy told him: ‘Your good fortune was that the deadly chemical did not do its worst.

‘You deliberately took a risk with her that could have resulted in her death. This was a truly appalling, senseless and unfathomable risk to take with the life of a young woman.’

The reason for Shreeve’s plot to drug the sixth-former remains a mystery but there was no known sexual motive, Snaresbrook Crown Court in East London heard.

Miss Rahman was described as a bright student doing A-levels in chemistry, maths, sociology and Spanish when she was poisoned in July 2008.

She had asked to help prepare experiments with 41-year-old Shreeve, who had recently been promoted to senior lab technician at Seven Kings High School in Ilford, Essex, where he had worked for six years.

The pair had worked together for several weeks and got along well when Shreeve lured her into the storeroom on the pretence of helping him with a stocktake.

He said he had spilled oil in the room and she would need to use a protective substance to breathe safely.

He then applied a chemical to a mask from a brown bottle which he had marked ‘chemical odour neutraliser’.

The bottle actually contained chloroform, despite the school’s supplier saying it had never provided that to the chemistry department.

Shreeve instructed Miss Rahman to cover her face with the mask and pretended to pour the chemical on his own mask.

She quickly became dizzy and pulled the mask down, but he made her put it back on and added more chloroform.

Nathan Palmer, prosecuting, said: ‘Everything slowed down. She felt the room spinning and lost consciousness.’

England were leading 1-0 through a fourth minute Steven Gerrard goal approaching halftime when Clint Dempsey sent in a weak shot from just outside the penalty area.

It appeared to be a routine save for Green but astonishingly he let the ball slip through his grasp and despite a despairing dive saw it trickle into the net.

England captain Gerrard gave his side a dream start after he latched on to a neat pass from Emile Heskey to beat Tim Howard in the U.S. goal with ease.

Fabio Capello’s men were holding onto their lead comfortably enough, aside from a scare when Jozy Altidore connected with a Landon Donovan cross to send his header wide, until the fortunate 40th minute equalizer.

The second half saw England press for the winner and Heskey was sent clear by Aaron Lennon but shot straight at Howard.

Wayne Rooney also sent a shot narrowly wide and cleverly set up substitute Shaun Wright-Phillips for a chance from the left side of the penalty area which he sent straight at Howard.

But English hearts were in their mouths as Altidore outpaced Jamie Carragher, who came on for the injured Ledley King at halftime, and bore down on goal.

This time Green came to the rescue, parrying his effort against the post to partially redeem himself for an error which will live long in the memory.

There was no masking the disappointment in the England camp at the final whistle.

“The idea tonight was to win the game, but unfortunately we have let a poor goal in and we couldn’t go on and get the winner,” Gerrard told ITV Sport.

“The target now has got to be seven points.”

England’s next game is against Algeria in Cape Town on Friday with the United States taking on Slovenia in Johannesburg.

Capello would not confirm if he will stand by Green for a game which now takes on added significance.

“Sometimes a forward misses a goal and sometimes the keeper makes a mistake, this is football. The second half he played very well,” said the Italian.

Two nine year olds known as the Wonder Twins for their record-beating exam results are set to become the youngest pupils admitted to a British secondary school.

Paula and Peter Imafidon, from Waltham Forest, London, amazed parents and teachers when they passed an A-level maths exam at the age of seven.

Their father Chris said he was thrilled by his childen’s achievements at school.

He denied any particular genius in the family, crediting their success to the Excellence in Education program for inner city children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

“Every child is a genius,” he said. “Once you identify the talent of a child and put them in the environment that will nurture that talent then the sky is the limit.

“Look at Tiger Woods, or the Williams sisters – they were nurtured.
