Many Eczema sufferers are unaware that sometimes good skin care regimes are all that stands between endless suffering and an improved quality of life.

Destinations for Outdoor Lovers

The simplest of changes and techniques can make all the difference, so I have put together a few tips to hopefully help you out. In the meantime, you can hear my personal story on how to completely get rid of this irritating skin disease whether you are an infant or adult age.

<<Hear my story here>>

First and foremost is to STOP USING THE STEROID CREAMS..whew..did I say that loud enough, they burn the skin and can cause skin cancer. Stop immediately

Fix Your Diet-
There’s a whole lot more to skincare than just fancy creams and lotions. Real skin care starts on the inside-if you give your body the tools it needs to fix the eczema damaged skin, you will have a definite advantage. Continuing to eat the wrong foods while trying to clear up your eczema is like trying to run your car without gasoline! It just can’t get going! Scientists have found that foods with high acidity are linked to increased Eczema symptoms. For some reason high acid content makes the skin more prone to irritation, which of course brings on the eczema. You can avoid this by obviously steering clear of acidy foods, which is easier than it sounds. A dietician should be able to steer you the right way though. Fear not though, there is a much simpler way to improve this too-kelp supplements. Kelp is very high in alkali, which will neutralize the acid it finds in your system, so you may find relief there.

Moisturize Regularly-
You need to get into a habit of moisturizing your skin at least twice a day, preferably after taking a bath or shower. This is great for your skin because the more moisture there is inside it, the suppler it will be, and obviously soft supple skin is far less likely to crack and itch than dry flaky skin. The reason you need to apply the moisturizer after bathing or showering is because this will help lock in the moisture from the bath. You should pat yourself almost dry with a very soft towel, and then apply the moisturizer to damp skin. It’s a little harder to rub in, but it’s worth it in the long run! We have the perfect solution and lotion to fight eczema and keep moisture in

Protect Yourself-
Be aware of all the things than can trigger your eczema, and do your best to avoid them. As a general rule, avoid wearing any kind of perfume or scent, as well as all scented soaps or toiletries. You will also probably find a little relief if you can get rid of all the perfumed detergents in your home. If you can wash your clothing in unscented natural detergents you will probably find that your clothing is suddenly not so itchy!

As I’ve tried to illustrate here, you don’t have to go to huge lengths to get some control in the battle against your eczema. In most cases all you need is common sense and some consistency. I hope these tips bring you some relief, but remember to be consistent! Hear my story and let me give you a free consultation on how to get it under control.

Michigan families struggle with unemployment, foreclosures

High unemployment is shattering the economic security of children in Michigan with one in every eight children living in a household struggling with job loss and one in every 20 kids affected by foreclosure, according to the Annie E. Casey Foundation’s annual KIDS COUNT Data Book released today.

The report ranks Michigan 30th among the states (with No. 1 being the best) for overall child well-being, the same as last year. The ranking slipped from two years ago when Michigan was 27. Between 2000 and 2009 an additional 75,000 children in the state fell below poverty level (roughly $22,000 for a two-parent family of four in 2009) as the state child poverty rate escalated by 64 percent—one of the largest increases in the nation. Michigan’s child poverty rate stands at 23 percent, up from 14 percent at the start of the decade.

The Data Book looks at 10 key areas of child well-being across states. Parental unemployment and foreclosure data were also included in this year’s report, which focuses on the recession.

“While there are bright spots in the report, it does show with startling clarity how deeply the recession has affected families across Michigan,’’ said Jane Zehnder-Merrell, director of the Kids Count in Michigan project at the Michigan League for Human Services. “Unemployment and foreclosures are adult issues but ones that dramatically affect kids, too. These economic stressors place children at much higher risk of worsening health and education outcomes.”

Michigan’s best ranking is No. 13 for teen births, with 33 births for every 1,000 teens ages 15-19. That compares with a national average of 41 births per 1,000 teens. It also ranked No. 15 for child death rate and No. 19 for teen death rate with big improvements in those areas since 2000.

Michigan’s worst ranking was No. 47 for secure parental employment. More than one-third (36%) of all Michigan children under age 18 were living in a household where no parent had full-time, year-round employment in 2009. That compares with 31 percent of children nationally.

The report also found that 12 percent or 281,000 children in Michigan had at least one unemployed parent in 2010 compared with 11 percent nationally. And 5 percent of Michigan kids were affected by foreclosures since 2007, compared with 4 percent nationally.

Another troubling ranking is No. 40 for infant mortality. Nearly 8 of every 1,000 Michigan babies do not live to their first birthdays, compared with just under 7 of every 1,000 nationally. Michigan also ranked poorly (No. 37) for the percent of low birthweight babies – with 8.6 percent of infants born too small, under 5.5 pounds, compared with 8.2 percent nationally. In Michigan roughly 10,400 babies were affected—putting them at higher risk of developmental delay, chronic disease and even death.

“This report is a clarion call to policymakers for a two-generation strategy. We must invest in preschool and early childhood but we can’t leave out adult education, higher education and job training,’’ said Gilda Z. Jacobs, president & CEO of the Michigan League for Human Services. “Our kids need a great start in life, but they also must have parents with the skills and the education to get good jobs.’’

Unfortunately, adult education has been cut more than 60 percent over the past decade, and colleges and universities will see a 15 percent cut in state funding in the next budget year after years of cuts. Community colleges will see a 4 percent decrease.

Among the strategies recommended in the KIDS COUNT Data Book to ease the impact of the recession on children and their families are to strengthen and modernize the unemployment insurance system, prevent foreclosure and strengthen existing programs that supplement low wages, such as the state Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).

Michigan has moved in the wrong direction on several of these strategies. The Michigan Legislature cut basic unemployment from 26 weeks to 20 weeks, the first state in the country to do that, and it failed to pass legislation to modernize its unemployment system, passing up $139 million in federal funds to strengthen the unemployment system.

Expiring unemployment benefits will put many more homeowners at risk. In 2009, Michigan lawmakers created a 90-day mortgage mediation program that was recently extended only until next January and should be further extended. The state should also make it a priority to spend its allocated federal Troubled Asset Relief Program Hardest Hit funds for foreclosure prevention; it has $498 million available to assist homeowners at risk of losing their homes.

Furthermore, Michigan lawmakers voted to cut the state EITC, which supplements low earnings for working parents, from 20 percent of the federal credit to 6 percent. This issue should be revisited when revenues are available.

This report was obtained from KIDS COUNT

Kids Count in Michigan is a collaboration of the Michigan League for Human Services, a nonprofit, nonpartisan statewide advocacy group for low-income families, and Michigan’s Children, a nonprofit voice for children and families in Michigan. It is part of a national effort to measure the well-being of children at state and local levels. The state project is supported by the Annie E. Casey Foundation of Baltimore, The Skillman Foundation of Detroit, the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Foundation, and the Michigan Association of United Ways.

The Annie E. Casey Foundation is a private charitable organization dedicated to helping build better futures for disadvantaged children in the United States. More Michigan data can be found at http://datacenter.Kidscount.org.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Karla Washington worries how she will afford new school uniforms for her five-year-old daughter.

Washington, an undergraduate student, earns less than $11,000 a year from a part-time university job.

The salary must cover food, rent, health care, child care and the occasional splurge on a Blue’s Clues item for her only child.

“My biggest fear is not providing my daughter with everything that she needs to be a balanced child, to be independent, to be safe, to feel like she is of value,” said Washington, 41.

Washington’s economic woes are seen throughout Nevada, where the nation’s highest unemployment and foreclosure rates have combined to devastate families and empty neighborhoods and construction yards.

A national study on child well-being published yesterday found Nevada had the highest rate of children whose parents are unemployed and underemployed. The state is also home to the most children affected by foreclosures — 13 percent of all Silver State babies, toddlers and teenagers have been kicked out of their homes because of an unpaid mortgage, the study found.

Mississippi kept its overall last place ranking in child welfare for the 10th consecutive year, according to the survey. It was closely trailed by neighboring Louisiana and Alabama, a nod to the poverty that plagues southern states. Nevada ranked 40th overall, its worst ranking in 10 years, largely because of its economic decline.

“We are really tired of being in 50th place,” said Linda Southward, a social science research professor at Mississippi State University. She said state policy makers have closely followed the rankings and have strived to promote early education as part of its strategy to reduce overall poverty.

Mississippi’s rankings were least affected by the recession, only because it long ago secured its worst-case standing. Overall, Mississippi ranked last in seven of the survey’s child well-being indicators.

“We are just extremely challenged given the economic hardships that we have,” she said.

Mississippi had the most children living in poverty, with 31 percent of its youth getting by on meager family budgets. New Hampshire had the smallest population of low-income children at 11 percent. The federal poverty level this year is $22,350 a year for a family of four, but child advocates claim that figure should be higher.

The African-American presence in the technology space has been enhanced with the recent release of the first digital storybook for kids, “A Song for Miles.” Written by Dr. Tiffany S. Russell, “A Song for Miles” uses black musical history to teach children important life lessons. Launched to coincide with the start of Black Music Month, “A Song for Miles” was conceived and produced by a 100% African-American team. Here’s more:

A Song for Miles by Dr. Tiffany S. Russell takes children on a colorful and interactive musical journey. Through the lyrics of soul songs by artists like Stevie Wonder, Earth, Wind, and Fire and Marvin Gaye, children learn the meaning of determination, kindness, and love. The digital book nurtures children’s inquisitive nature and love of music and sounds, all while teaching valuable lessons and the importance of having good character.

A Song for Miles links with a school-based character education curriculum. The story creatively aligns with character traits such as initiative, compassion, civility, respect, empathy, responsibility, and perseverance. Character development is an integral part of raising respectful and happy children and A Song for Miles appeals to parents as it creates a platform for values discussions. Children enjoy the colorful pages while parents and music lovers appreciate the musical content and paying tribute to their favorite soul music artists. [...]

A Song for Miles represents a watershed moment in “new media.” It is the first digital storybook on the AppStore that was written (Dr. Russell), illustrated (Raheli Scarborough), scored (c’beyohn), narrated (Jamal Ahmad), and developed (Diverse Mobile) by African Americans.

Will you be picking up a copy of “A Song For Miles” to share with the young people in your life? As we delve further and further into the 21st century, we need our cultural creators to make media that preserve our traditions while teaching them to the following generation. I salute Dr. Tiffany S. Russell and her team for successfully doing both. Now go out and support!

On May 6 Holder brought this message to The Forum at the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) in remarks and a discussion broadcast live via the web and posted as an on-demand webcast.

Children’s exposure to violence, which can cause physical, emotional, and psychological harm, is “one of the greatest public safety and public health epidemics of our time,” Holder told the audience.

Children today are much more likely than adults to be exposed to violence and crime, from bullying at school, seeing parents strike each other, or experiencing a knife or gunfight, he said.

Whether a child is a victim or a witness, he added, “Violence affects the brain as much as it affects the body and the spirit.”

Research has demonstrated the cumulative effect of violence, Holder continued, citing a Justice Department study that found “a majority of our children — more than 60 percent of them — have been exposed to some type of crime, abuse, or violence.”

According to Holder, these children are more likely to suffer depression or to fail in school; have a greater risk of drug and alcohol abuse as adults; are more likely to develop chronic disease; have difficulty establishing emotional closeness; and are more likely to commit acts of violence.

Since many programs operate at the state level, asked Harvard Law School Professor Ronald Sullivan, how can federal authorities create the political will to institute change?

Through grant making, Holder replied. “You’d be surprised at the number of cities and neighborhoods that want to try these things.”

Professor Ronald Sullivan joins us from Harvard to discuss this issue but read this article in its entirety on the Harvard Gazette
