WASHINGTON (AP) — No major medical group recommends routine PSA blood tests to check men for prostate cancer, and now a government panel is saying they do more harm than good and healthy men should no longer receive the tests as part of routine cancer screening.

The panel’s guidelines had long advised men over 75 to forgo the tests and the new recommendation extends that do-not-screen advice to healthy men of all ages.

The recommendation by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, being made public on Friday, will not come as a surprise to cancer specialists.

Yet, most men over 50 have had at least one PSA blood test, the assumption being that finding cancer early is always a good thing.

Not so, said Dr. Virginia Moyer of the Baylor College of Medicine, who heads the task force.

“We have put a huge amount of time, effort and energy into PSA screening and that time, effort and energy, that passion, should be going into finding a better test instead of using a test that doesn’t work,” Moyer told The Associated Press late Thursday.

Too much PSA, or prostate-specific antigen, in the blood only sometimes signals prostate cancer is brewing. It also can mean a benign enlarged prostate or an infection. Worse, screening often detects small tumors that will prove too slow-growing to be deadly. And there’s no sure way to tell in advance who needs aggressive therapy.

The task force analyzed all the previous research on this subject, including five major studies, to evaluate whether routine screening reduces deaths from prostate cancer. The conclusion: There’s little if any mortality benefit.

But there is harm from routine screening: impotence, incontinence, infections, even death that can come from the biopsies, surgery and radiation, Moyer said.

One study estimated 2 of every 5 men whose prostate cancer was caught through a PSA test had tumors too slow-growing to ever be a threat.

Yet Moyer said 30 percent of men who are treated for PSA-discovered prostate cancer suffer significant side effects, sometimes death, from the resulting treatment.

About a third of men ages 40 to 60 have brewing prostate cancer but “the huge majority of them will never know it in their lifetime if they are not screened,” she added.

The task force previously had considered the evidence for or against PSA screening inconclusive. The new recommendation says not to routinely screen. That recommendation is a draft that is open for public comment beginning next week.

“We have been long concerned, and it has been apparent for some years, that some supporters of prostate cancer screening have overstated, exaggerated and in some cases misled men about the evidence supporting its effectiveness,” said Dr. Otis Brawley of the American Cancer Society in a statement. “We need balanced, truthful information to be made widely available to physicians and patients when making important health decisions.”

The society had not seen the new recommendation yet, but has long advised men to consider the pros and cons of PSA screening before deciding on their own.

Moyer said the recommendation only means that doctors shouldn’t bring up the option for healthy men. If a man asks for a PSA test and wants it after being informed of the evidence, he should receive it, she said. Likewise, it’s appropriate to use PSA tests to examine a man with possible prostate symptoms.

“This is a perfect example of a scientific area where there is a paucity of information, and this study is going to help fill that hole,” says Dr. Therese Dolecek of University of Illinois at Chicago, and lead investigator in the study.

Dolecek’s team is investigating the risk factors specifically associated with black women who develop the disease. They aim to enroll 1,000 African American women recently diagnosed with ovarian cancer. The study began last year and is scheduled to end in 2015.

The critical problem with ovarian cancer is that it’s often diagnosed late in the disease, when treatments are not as successful.

One of the most incurable forms of cancer remains brain cancer and the average brain cancer survival rate period is 1-2 years. Still today, there is no recognized cure for this disease. Although treatment helps to improve the condition of the patient a little, there is no guarantee that it will be cured. Eleanor Mondale, daughter of former Vice President Walter Mondale who carved out her own reputation as an entertainment reporter, radio show host and gossip magnet, has died of brain cancer at her home in Minnesota. She was 51.

There are number of factors that influence the brain cancer survival rate. These include the size of the tumor, the intensity of the cancer, its location within the brain, the overall health of the patient and the stage of the cancer. Brain tumor can often be removed through a completely surgery if it is benign and non cancerous and therefore increasing the brain cancer survival rate of the patient.

The calculation of brain cancer survival rate is specific. Normally, the brain cancer survival rate is calculated on a 5 year period. This means that the brain cancer survival rate will show the percentage of patients who are still alive after passage of 5 years to the date when they were first diagnosed. Brain cancer survival rate are based on a huge number of people and therefore, it is very important that you do not use brain cancer survival rate for predicting the survival of an individual patient.

A new UK study has shown that exercising is key in preventing the recurrence of cancer in survivors. This challenges the recommendation that survivors should get more rest and take it easy.
All patients getting cancer treatment should be told to do two and a half hours of physical exercise every week, says a report by Macmillan Cancer Support.Being advised to rest and take it easy after treatment is an outdated view, the charity says.

Research shows that exercise can reduce the risk of dying from cancer and minimize the side effects of treatment.

The Department of Health says local initiatives can get people moving. Macmillan’s report, Move More, says that of the two million cancer survivors in the UK, around 1.6 million are not physically active enough. Adult cancer patients and cancer survivors should undertake 150 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity per week, the reports says, which is what the Department of Health guidelines recommend.

In the report, the American College of Sports Medicine also recommends that exercise is safe during and after most types of cancer treatment and says survivors should avoid inactivity. It doesn’t need to be anything too strenuous, doing the gardening, going for a brisk walk or a swim, all count” Getting active, the report says, can help people overcome the effects of cancer and its treatments, such as fatigue and weight gain.

“The evidence review shows that physical exercise does not increase fatigue during treatment, and can in fact boost energy after treatment.” [SOURCE]

Back on Dec. 16, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommended revoking approval of the drug to fight breast cancer, citing the medication’s poor performance in follow-up studies and its potential for serious side effects.

The drug’s maker, Genentech, now owned by the pharmaceutical giant Roche, was given the chance to appeal the FDA recommendation and present additional evidence. That appeal will be the focus of the hearing and, according to published reports, will involve Genentech urging one more clinical trial before any government action on the drug.

The FDA’s unusual step of scheduling another hearing on the drug underscores the difficulty of withdrawing approval of a cancer medication.

After the World Health Organization revealed the connection between cell phone radiation and brain cancer, you can imagine the worries that must have spread through the black community. More than any other group, black people live on their cell phones. Let’s face it: We like to stay connected. The convenience and portability of a cell phone is similar to keeping the barber shop, hair salon, or your favorite church group in your pocket.

RELATED: African-Americans At High Risk Of Cell Phone-Related Cancer

Even though the radiation emissions of cell phones have been linked to disease, you do not have to give up your cell phone chatting habits completely. Here are ten tips that can protect you from cell phone radiation, so that you can stay connected to your favorite folks:

1. Do not make calls when your bars are low.
This forces the phone to work harder to establish a connection, making it release more radiation.

2. Do not use your cell phone in enclosed spaces, such as elevators or cars.
Enclosures force phones to release more radiation to connect to signals.

3. Refrain from making cell calls while driving.
Moving rapidly while talking requires your cell phone to reconnect frequently to new towers, causing large amounts of energy to be released.

4. Limit the use of your cell phone.
Keep calls short, and text instead of calling whenever possible.

5. Do not keep a cell phone on your body while it is on.
The body can also absorb harmful radiation, so keep it away from your torso when not in use.

6. Use the speakerphone.
If you are alone and won’t annoy others, this is a great way to talk while keeping the phone at a safe distance from your head.

7. If you use Bluetooth, switch the device from side to side.
This will prevent the radiation exposure from being concentrated on one side. While the radiation from a Bluetooth device is lower than that of a cell phone, there is still some risk.

8. Use a wired headset with a ferrite bead.
The wire that attaches the listening device to your phone also transmits radiation into the ear, but it is far less than having the cell phone directly next to your head. By attaching a ferrite bead, which you can purchase at many electronics stores, you further reduce the radiation transmission.

9. Only let children use cell phones in an emergency.
All little kids want cell phones these days, but the radiation from these devices penetrates much further into their smaller brains. Don’t let them use cell phones routinely.

10. Invest in a low radiation cell phone.
Different devices emit varying levels of radiation, so it’s worth investigating whether a low radiation cell phone might be right for you. In addition, no matter what your phone model is, follow the manufacturer’s advice about usage, which often contains directions for how to use and carry your phone to limit radiation exposure.

The World Health Organization announced Tuesday that cell phones raise the risk of cancer. The announcement, made after a team of international scientists reviewed various studies on cell phone safety is particularly relevant to the black community as studies have consistently shown blacks to dominate cell phone use. Not to mention, African-Americans suffer the highest cancer rates and deaths of all racial groups.

“What microwave radiation does in most simplistic terms is similar to what happens to food in microwaves, essentially cooking the brain,” Dr. Keith Black, chairman of neurology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles said. “So in addition to leading to a development of cancer and tumors, there could be a whole host of other effects like cognitive memory function, since the memory temporal lobes are where we hold our cell phones.”
