Local contractor Karl Kado, who is reportedly cooperating in a federal investigation against ex-Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, is scheduled to be sentenced today on federal income tax-related charges.

Kado, 69, of West Bloomfield pleaded guilty last June in U.S. District Court in Detroit to making a false statement in a tax return.

The Free Press reported on Feb. 21 that he is cooperating in an investigation against Kilpatrick and the ex-mayor’s father, Bernard Kilpatrick.

Kado told authorities he paid Kwame Kilpatrick bribe money in four or five installments of about $20,000 each to protect multimillion-dollar Cobo Center contracts, according to the Feb. 21 article. Kado said he sometimes delivered the money in envelopes to Kilpatrick’s office on the 11th floor at City Hall, and sometimes Kilpatrick dropped by Cobo to get the cash.

Kado also told federal investigators that he was hit up for cash by Bernard Kilpatrick and by the ex-mayor’s chief information officer, Derrick Miller, according to the article.

A sentencing memorandum filed today by Assistant U.S. Attorney Mark Chutkow said Kado provided “substantial assistance in the investigation and prosecution of others.”
