Pugh

The paper

A two-page motion alleging Charles Pugh’s money problems remain, despite his job as Detroit City Council president. The February motion from his condominium association alleges he’s defaulted on a deal to pay back $4,600 in unpaid dues and fees.

The chase

Weeks before his November election, Pugh was sued by Woodward Place at Brush Park III over unpaid dues. But the parties came to an agreement weeks later in which Pugh paid $3,000 of the debt, according to court records.

He was supposed to pay back the rest in monthly payments. But a judge has reopened the association’s Wayne County Circuit Court lawsuit alleging that Pugh is in default.

Pugh had a string of money problems last year, almost losing his condo after defaulting on a $331,000 bank loan.

Also last spring, Wayne County began foreclosure proceedings on the condo on Adelaide Street after he didn’t pay $2,631.89 in property taxes.  The proceedings stopped when Pugh paid the taxes.

Last year’s troubles followed 11 notices of eviction for unpaid rent at Trolley Plaza from 2001 to 2005.

Why it matters

Pugh said this week he worked out a deal with his bank to save the home from mortgage foreclosure and is hoping to do the same with the condo association.

“I was recently able to renegotiate my mortgage and I hope that the condo association will also work with me while I adjust to making less income,” Pugh said in a written statement.

Pugh, a former television reporter, has blamed his money problems on leaving WJBK, Fox 2 and a job at WJLB, 97.9-FM.

He has said he made more than $200,000 a year before resigning to run for council. His council post pays $85,000 and comes with a city car.
