Edward Davis was fatally shot May 22, 1992 at his east side home on Baldwin Street. Davis’ girlfriend at the time told police a man had shown up several times during the day asking for Davis, and that when the two were at home that evening the man had showed up again. When the Davis opened the door, the man reached through a tear in the screen and fatally shot him once, police said. Davis’ girlfriend told police she heard the man asking Davis for money. At the time of the shooting, police were only able to identify the man as someone who went by the street name of “Hook.” In the meantime, Davis’ girlfriend discovered she was pregnant with his child and gave birth to a son — Edward Jr. Davis was 20 years old at the time of his death. He was also the youngest of 14 children. Detroit Police Chief Warren Evans said a DPD cold case squad recently revisited the shooting case file. An investigator made a connection between the street name “Hook” and a former inmate, Calvin McWilliams. Evans said further investigation revealed that McWilliams had lived in the area of the shooting and was released from prison just one day before Davis was killed. McWilliams had been in prison for a robbery charge and violation of probation. Evans said McWilliams admitted to being at the house and witness interviews established him as the shooter. McWilliams was charged with several felonies, including first-degree murder and felon in possession of a firearm. Evans said a motive for the shooting has not been determined but that it may have been robbery. He was arraigned Sunday in the 36th District Court. Evans said McWilliams also served a 10-year prison sentence from 1997 to 2007 for a drug conviction. |
