“Manners are one of many things that are central to a Southerner’s identity, but they are not primary anymore. Things have eroded,” said Charles Reagan Wilson, a professor of history and southern culture at the University of Mississippi.

The Times focused on a case in which two men were ordered by a restaurant to stand up from their bar seats so two ladies could sit. The men refused the orders, and a bar fight broke out over it. Many Southerners feel that giving up a seat to a lady is part of their culture. The men, who were both African American, didn’t see it that way; as the ladies they were told to get up for were white; and they claimed racism in a lawsuit over the fight.

Many Southerners are also attributing the erosion of manners to the influx of Northerners.

Despite the fact that the death penalty goes against the Christian Commandment, “Thou Shalt Not Kill,” much of the support for the penalty comes from right-wing Christians.

Still, many opposed to the death penalty may have different views if one of their loved ones is killed.

But given the inefficiencies of our justice system, the death penalty is too often given to the poor and minorities and often results in innocent people being killed.

The fan who caught Derek Jeter’s historic 3,000th hit, Christian Lopez, called Derek Jeter a “Latino” when he was interviewed after catching the historic ball.

Problem is that Derek Jeter is far from Latino — he’s actually half-Black and white.

Now many look at Derek Jeter in the same way they look at Tiger Woods; almost as color-less athletes. Both of them have stayed far away from any type of racial issues or talk which have endeared them to all types of fans.

With his appeal amongst all fans, and refusal to speak about any racial issues, do you consider Jeter to be a Black man?

Florida Governor Rick Scott has required that all welfare recipients in the state of Florida be drug-screened before receiving their benefits.

“It is unfair for Florida taxpayers to subsidize drug addiction,” said Scott.

The American Civil Liberties Union is currently suing the state of Florida for requiring state workers to be drug tested, and many expect them to sue against the mandated drug screening for welfare law.

Afrika Owes was recently sentenced to 90 days in prison before entering a guilty plea for helping her boyfriend run guns and drugs while she was in a Connecticut prep school.

The 17-year-old, who served two months in prison before Harlem’s historic Abyssinian Baptist Church bailed her out, hasn’t gained the sympathy of everyone; especially those in her own Harlem community.
