Here’s the Horse Sense (with apologies to James Whitcomb Riley): If ducks are liberal, then when I see a bird that walks like a duck and swims like a duck and quacks like a duck, I call that bird Mitt Romney.

Let’s see if I understand this.

We’re supposed to believe that Mitt Romney is a conservative and the candidate with the best chance to beat Obama in the general election.

We’re supposed to believe that he’s got some sort of conservative record.

We’re supposed to believe that he’ll be the great conservative savior of the nation.

We’re supposed to believe that he was only governing the way he did with moderate and liberal policies in Massachusetts because he had to work with Democrats in a blue state, but in reality he’s purported to be a true conservative.

We’re supposed to believe that even though he uses Saul Alinsky’s left-wing methods to attack his competitors that he’s the true conservative.

We’re supposed to believe that he’s the victim of unfair and merciless attacks because he’s a conservative.

We’re supposed to believe the left when they tell us Romney would be the “toughest to beat” for Obama in the general election, even though the last thing the left is known for is telling the truth.

Mitt Romney’s recent release of his tax federal tax filings reveals a real problem for him and the Republican Party. It’s not just the amount of his vast wealth, or his former Swiss bank account, or his money stashed away in the Cayman Islands. The problem is that these three elements combine to reinforce the narrative that Romney is the living embodiment of a political-economic nexus that creates few winners and an increasing number of losers. He is the fat cat who is so despised by many Americans. The fact that he is still the likely nominee, with his moderate record, a healthcare plan that is the basis of the national reform law hated by most Republicans, and a religion many fundamentalist Christian conservatives view as a cult, shows just how desperate the Grand Old Party is to unseat President Barack Obama.

There is a difference between capitalism and vulture capitalism. Romney is on the wrong side of the divide and reasonable people can see the difference. Romney’s brand of capitalism has helped to create a chasm between people and the country and is more responsible for the job loss, growing inequality, and societal anger. And yet, the Republican establishment is bending over backwards to help ensure he overcomes Newt Gingrich’s onslaught.

His campaign and likely nomination will make it far more difficult for Republicans to make the argument that they have the ideas and positions that will create real opportunity for Americans. They have never been the party of regular, working class people, notwithstanding their mendacious rhetoric and their policies. American voters, who need a reality check on what “middle-class” really means, will not need much priming to be reminded that the Republican nominee is an ultra rich guy who sees more than $300,000 in speaking fees as “not much” money.

His belated response to all the talk about his taxes — own his success and highlight his charitable donations — is too late to help. Saying, “Yeah, I’m rich,” is not the way to win friends and influence people. But it is completely in line with Republican orthodoxy.

More than most elections, the contest for President this fall is likely to be decided less on “wedge issues” — or even candidate positions that are symbolic of who is on whose side — and more on the character and core values of the candidates — and for that matter on the question of the core values of the society we hope to leave to our children.

Last Friday, speaking to the Democratic Caucus Policy Conference, Vice-President Joe Biden told a story that speaks volumes about the character of Barack Obama.

According to Biden, the day before he ordered the raid that finally stopped Osama Bin Laden, President Obama met with his top national security advisers in the Situation Room. At the close of the meeting, he went around the room asking each person for his or her recommendation on whether to launch the risky nighttime mission.

Then the President stood and told his advisers he would let them know of his decision in the morning.

The next day, as Obama stepped onto his helicopter to leave on a day trip, he turned to his National Security Adviser, Tom Donilan, and issued a simple order:

“let’s go.”

Why Right-Wing Policy Is the Enemy of Economic Growth

To quote Biden, “The President has a backbone like a ramrod.”

Whether or not you like all of his policies — or all of his decisions — it’s hard to argue that Barack Obama is not a tough, decisive guy — a guy who is guided by solid core principles and has a disciplined, laser-focused will. This is not a President that flip-flops in the political wind or is swayed by the last person who talks to him. Above all, Barack Obama is centered. He has a solid core built around strong core values.

Obama has remained determined and unflappable in the face of the toughest economic and political environment in sixty years and has emerged from three years of battle ready to wage a highly organized, focused campaign this fall that will center on most fundamental question facing our society: whether we will have a nation where we look out for each other, and have each other’s back — or a society where we are all in this alone.

Contrast that kind of President — and that kind of campaign — with Obama’s likely opponent, Mitt Romney.

Voters want leaders who believe in something other than their own election. Quite correctly they want leaders with a strong moral center. They want leaders who make and keep commitments to their principles and to other people. And they want to know that the candidates they support are the leaders they will get after the election — not, as John Huntsman said of Romney, “a well-oiled weathervane”.

Obama Isn’t Trying to Start ‘Class Warfare’ — He Wants to End the Republican War on the Middle Class

Romney has never seen a position he couldn’t change if he determined it would be to his advantage to do so. He thinks of politics as a business marketing project, where you say what you think you need to in order to maximize sales. Romney doesn’t think of voters as citizens to be engaged — he thinks of them as customers to be manipulated.

In the end, it is likely that the ultimate irony of the Romney campaign will be that his own willingness to toss aside positions and values that might at one time or another have appeared inconvenient, will ultimately weigh him down more than anything else.

Please consider these 6 mistakes retirees commonly make with their finances, offered by retirement lifestyle expert Julia Valentine, author of “Joy Compass: How to Make Your Retirement the Treasure of Your Life”:

Take financial advice from friends and family over that of professionals. Even the most well-intentioned and insightful advice does not replace that of an investing expert, accountant or other retirement finance authority to aide with critical decision making that will impact the entirety of your life, for the rest of your life.

Underestimating inflation. If your nest egg is not earning enough to stay ahead of inflation and taxes, your retirement lifestyle is likely to get scrambled well ahead of its time. It’s key to establish the appropriate blend of risk and return necessary to maintain short-term purchasing power in working toward your long-term goals.

Withdrawing too much money early on in retirement and running out of resources later on in life. Surveys show that the typical American is not knowledgeable about health care costs, life expectancy, income needs, and other risks.

Lacking a financial plan that includes estate planning, budget, etc. for both the short and long term to avoid problems and capitalize on all financial opportunities. According to the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators, state treasurers currently hold $32.9 billion in unclaimed bank accounts and other assets. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, $850M in 401(k) assets go unclaimed each year.

Failing to adjust the asset allocation of investment vehicles in your portfolio with time (i.e., “stage of retirement” relative to life expectancy), and having an inappropriate mix of investments for one’s lifestyle goals, timeframes and risk tolerance.

Failing to educate oneself about financial scams – 1 out of 5 Americans over 65 has been a victim of a financial scam, according to the Washington-based non-profit Investor Protection Trust. More than 7.3m seniors are taken advantage of financially through inappropriate investments, high fees or fraud, at a cost of more than $2.6 billion a year. Four in five cases are not reported, according to the MetLife Mature Market Institute Study, March 2009.

The book also contains 16 pages of new developments and an in-depth look at her latest appeal, which got some traction recently with the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals by raising fascinating forensic questions about her conviction and the cause of her husband’s death.

Franklin D. Roosevelt wasn’t always “Franklin D. Roosevelt.”

As President Barack Obama devises his reelection strategy, he should understand the implications of this statement and act on them. Whether this election will have major consequences for our future and what Obama’s place in history will be could both depend on the willingness of the president and Democrats to do so.

Obama and his advisers are likely tempted to opt for a stand-pat re-election effort because of the improving unemployment numbers. That may be enough to get him re-elected. But it won’t be the sort of transformative election that could secure his place in history as a great president — which acting on that FDR statement could achieve.

To understand why, look to the seemingly schizophrenic results of two recent polls. A December Gallup Poll found that 64 percent of Americans see Big Government as the nation’s largest threat, while only 26 percent see Big Business as the greatest threat.

A month earlier, however, 75 percent of Americans surveyed in a Wall Street Journal/NBC poll said that “the current economic structure of the country is out of balance and favors a very small proportion of the rich over the rest of the country,” the “power of major banks and corporations” needs to be reduced and the rich should not receive tax breaks. Sixty percent strongly agreed with this. Only 12 percent disagreed, 6 percent strongly.

{Robert S. McElvaine is a history professor at Millsaps College. His most recent book is a 25th-anniversary edition of “The Great Depression.” He is now writing, “Oh, Freedom! — The Young ’60s.”}

The long-awaited No Labels Anthem is now featured in the iTunes Music Store and available for purchase for 99 cents. Written by Grammy award-winning platinum artist Akon and performed by Grammy-nominated platinum artist Deborah Cox, the song’s proceeds will help fund No Labels, a citizens’ movement of Democrats, Republicans and Independents by empowering our leaders to work across the aisle. Recently, No Labels launched its Make Congress Work! action plan, which features a dozen common sense proposals to combat the gridlock and hyper-partisanship that make it virtually impossible to deal with America’s serious challenges.

“When I told Akon about No Labels, he was so inspired that he stayed up all night to write this song,” said No Labels co-founder Lisa Borders. “The No Labels Anthem speaks to our fellow citizens of every persuasion who are not being served by a partisan, dysfunctional Congress. We want our leaders to work together – like the words and melody of this iconic song – to do what’s best for the ‘indivisible’ United States of America.”

Lisa Borders of No Labels Organizationgives Inside Detroit an update

“The No Labels mission moved me to get involved and perform this song,” said Cox, who has 11 number-one Billboard dance singles. “To citizens like me, Congress is like an orchestra where every member is trying to play their instrument louder than the next. That makes for bad music and its made for bad government. Our leaders need to put aside their differences and work together for the good of the country.”

The No Labels Anthem debuts on the day of the president’s State of the Union address, where over 196 members of Congress will be sitting with members of the opposite party. No Labels has made bipartisan seating at the State of the Union and all joint meetings of Congress one of the 12 proposals in its Make Congress Work! action plan.

The No Labels Anthem can be purchased on iTunes here and the album cover and lyrics can be viewed here.

No Labels is a group of Republicans, Democrats and Independents who want our government to work again. Our dozen proposals to Make Congress Work! mostly don’t require new laws or new spending, and don’t favor any party or particular cause. These are simple, straightforward proposals to break gridlock, promote constructive discussion and reduce polarization in Congress. They can mostly be adopted all at once when the next Congress convenes in January 2013.

At a rally Mildred Gaddis told the crowd to vote for U.S. Rep. Ron Paul for president at the Feb. 28 presidential primary.

By voting for Paul, a Republican, they hope to derail Mitt Romney’s primary performance in his native state and force Paul to stay in the race and run as an independent.

Because Obama is the lone Democrat on the ballot, there’s no harm to him, and state Democrats plan to officially nominate him at caucuses in May. – Detroit Free Press

“There is a $10-million election taking place next month with our tax dollars,” said WCHB radio host Mildred Gaddis. “Help me and help Ron Paul get all the votes he can.

“They can’t control this. He’s driving them crazy. We need him to run as an independent, shaving off votes from the Republican.”

Voters in Michigan don’t have to register as a Republican, Democrat or independent. And although it is frowned upon, partisan voters can cast ballots for their opponents in the primary, just to create a bit of chaos.

Democratic activist Ernest Johnson said Romney’s South Carolina loss was good because it took Romney’s focus off Obama and onto another Republican, Newt Gingrich.- Detroit Free Press

“This is Romney’s home, and if he comes here and loses — which we can help him do — his campaign is over,” Johnson said.

Harvey Thompson, jazz vocalist, was born in Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A. After years of appearances in talent shows and local jazz joints and performances at Japanese concert halls and swank Turkish night spots, the Japan-based and world-traveling Thompson can rightfully be called a versatile master of jazz vocals.

His first CD, entitled “Jazz Is (Anything You Want It to Be),” is a fine example of his polished vocal skill. With help from some of Detroit’s top jazz musicians, such as trumpeter Marcus Belgrave and Straight Ahead’s lead singer Cynthia Dewberry, Harvey shines on this CD, which continues to receive regular radio airplay.

The Detroit Free Press writes, “Harvey Thompson’s eloquent baritone voice is dark, smooth and luxurious, comparable to Joe Williams’ and deeper than Billy Eckstine’s. His career is poised to skyrocket.”

With his silky smooth voice, comfortable stage presence, and wide repertoire, reflecting influences ranging from Johnny Hartman to Nat King Cole, Harvey Thompson can be considered “the keeper of the flame” of male jazz vocals.

“Today, I’m confident in my ability to dignify the jazz idiom with my voice,” Harvey says. “I’ve been blessed to have been influenced by, met and even worked with, a wide sample of the world’s best jazz talent. These experiences have helped to focus and strengthen my ongoing salute to some of the world’s great composers and to the vocal tradition that makes jazz such a powerful international musical force!”
