ELEV8:  Are you involved with any other community service projects?

KELLY PRICE:  Yes, I’m involved with this exciting organization called, “Broadway in the Hood.”  They’re based out of Las Vegas and setting up satellite locations now.  The company is working with kids and teens who have been in high risk circumstances such as parents in jail or rehab, been homeless etc.  We’re creating a positive outlet and getting them off the streets and showing them various aspects of Broadway and the arts in front and behind the stage.  The program is giving kids the same opportunities that suburban kids have been afforded in the past.  I know for me as a kid I started writing music at 7 and needed an outlet to expand my creativity.  I got involved to assist kids like me who are creative and interested in music and arts.  Other celebrities like Boris Kodjoe, Mekhi Phifer and Craig Robinson are involved.

ELEV8:  That is great to hear about all that you’re doing but when can we hear new music from you?

KELLY PRICE:  (laughs) very soon.  My album is scheduled to release October 2010.   The first single is entitled, “TIRED.”  I’m really excited about this album because its probably the realest Kelly Price album of my career.  I am more comfortable and have more freedom due to just becoming wiser as I’m striving to be the best that I can be.  I’m singing about things that concern me and are relatable to women and men.  I’ve come to know that it’s OK and we’re only human.  I’m really looking forward to this album.

ELEV8:  With your album coming out this fall, have you collaborated with any other artists?

KELLY PRICE: Yes, since I’ve moved to LA, I’ve started writing music for other artists in addition to doing work with upcoming  television and movie projects.

ELEV8:  Kelly, many readers may know a little about you and your husband experiencing both your mothers’ being diagnosed with breast cancer.  I’m sure that was a difficult time for your family.  Can you share with us how you and your family got through that?

KELLY PRICE: That was 1998 and it was an extremely difficult time in my life.  I had just released my first album (Soul of a Woman).  When it should have been an exciting time in my life, it was a draining and bittersweet one.  I was trying to do the best for everyone and it just took a harsh toll on my family.  It taught me a valuable lesson that no one can afford cancer emotionally or financially.

ELEV8:  How are your mother and mother in law?

KELLY PRICE: Unfortunately, my husband lost his mom to breast cancer.  This was the second time he went through this.  His biological mom and step mom succumbed to breast cancer. My mother is doing well and has been in remission for 10 years but her entire lifestyle had to change. It’s so important that we educate ourselves about breast cancer.  One of the most vivid memories I have when my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer is being in the doctor’s office with my sisters and the doctor asked my mom, “What took you so long to come?” She replied “I was afraid.” I realized FEAR is a big factor and we need to work toward eliminating the fear factor of going to the doctor and getting our annual mammogram.   We must be proactive and watch for signs.

ELEV8: How are you being proactive with your health being your mom was diagnosed with breast cancer?

KELLY PRICE:  I’m making sure I’m getting my mammograms when scheduled and watching my diet and exercising.  I also do breast exams at home.  I continue to educate myself and daughter about breast cancer.  It’s very important that my family stays informed.

ELEV8:  You made a big financial donation of $250,000 to the T.J. Martell Foundation and Denise Rich’s G&P Foundation for Cancer and Research. In addition to that, you also donated proceeds of your single, “Love Sets You Free” to help the ongoing fight against breast cancer. What motivated you to do that when you could have just donated your name and time?

KELLY PRICE: Activism is personal for me.  Proceeds to my single are still being donated to the foundations. It’s available on itunes now. My mom’s reply to her doctor motivated me and the experience of both my mom and mother in law having breast cancer. I want to continue to educate women about breast cancer.   I’d like to be a spokesperson for breast cancer and start a movement for women to get their annual mammograms.  I’d like to get a bus, have someone donate a mammogram machine and travel the country and set up at locations and get women examined and educate them.  I know its overwhelming trying to stay current with your mammograms especially when you don’t have medical insurance.

ELEV8: Do you have a foundation that works in conjunction with the other organizations you work with?

KELLY PRICE:   Yes, my organization is called Priceless Promises but I’m also working with other foundations that have the same mission.  Through my organization, we have also set up a program called, The Look to Live Foundation. It focuses on the families of  the sick.  We’re interested in assisting the entire family’s well-being and showing them how to move forward beyond the illness.  How the family will live after and get on the other side of the cancer.  Going through it with my mother-in-law and mother,  I would recommend families 2 key things to do when dealing with someone who is ill and going through cancer.

1- Talk to someone on a regular basis.

2- Stay Healthy (Mentally and Physically)

ELEV8:  What advice can you give parents who have kids going through this as well?

KELLY PRICE: I would reassure the children and be truthful to them.  In me and my husband’s experience, we found it best to explain what’s going on to our kids.  Getting pamphlets and having the doctor speak to them is helpful if needed.  The truth of the matter helps while going through this type of ordeal.

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — Diego Maradona is out as Argentina’s soccer coach.

The Argentine Football Association said Tuesday it would not renew his contract. He had spent an erratic 21 months in charge of a national team that was eliminated in the World Cup quarterfinals with a 4-0 loss to Germany.

The federation had offered Maradona a four-year contract to continue through the 2014 World Cup. But Maradona said he would stay only if his entire staff remained.

That was unacceptable to Argentine Football Association president Julio Grondona. He had asked for several assistants to be replaced. One of them is Maradona’s close friend Alejandro Mancuso. The federation’s executive committee sided with Grondona.

Just when you thought you were making the right decision of selecting iced tea instead of soda,  new studies show that iced tea raises the risk of kidney stones.

If you’ve suffered from kidney stones this summer it may be because you had too much iced tea.

The popular summertime beverage has high concentrations of oxalate — a key chemical in the formation of kidney stones. Though hot tea also has oxalates, it’s not as easily consumed in large quantities like its cold counterpart.

Kidney stones, a disorder of the urinary tract, affect about 10 percent of the United States population. Men are four times more likely to develop these painful crystals than women, and the risk increases for those aged 40 and older, as well as for postmenopausal women with low estrogen or those with their ovaries removed.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Two Drexel University basketball players face robbery and weapons charges after an armed robbery at a fellow student’s apartment in which they went looking for cash but came away only with two cell phones, police said.

Jamie Harris, 21, the team’s starting point guard and leading scorer, and Kevin Phillip, 21, a backup forward, turned themselves in Monday, Philadelphia police Lt. John Walker said. A third man, Devon Bond, 21, also a Drexel student, was arrested last week.

Bond knocked on the door around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday and asked to speak with the male roommate of the woman who answered, Walker said. Once inside, he and the woman discussed school for about 15 minutes.

When he left the building, Bond propped the outside door open and returned a few minutes later with Harris and Phillip, who were armed with handguns, police said. One of the players then forced Bond to the ground as part of a ruse to make it look as if he was being robbed, Walker said.

Harris and Phillip pointed their guns around the woman’s apartment and kept asking where the money was, but they didn’t find any, Walker said. The three men allegedly fled only with two cell phones.

“We think the roommate of the victim was being targeted,” Walker said. “We believe Bond knew that there was money in that apartment.”

After the female student reported the robbery, Bond told police he had been the victim of a crime, Walker said. Police quickly found out that wasn’t true, Walker said, and determined he had plotted the robbery with Harris and Phillip.

Bond was charged Friday, and warrants were issued for Harris and Phillip on Saturday. All three face robbery, theft and weapons charges, Walker said.

An attorney for Phillip declined to comment, and a message left for Harris’ attorney was not immediately returned. It wasn’t clear whether Bond had an attorney, and a telephone listing for him could not be found.

Harris, a 5-10 point guard out of New York City, started all 32 games for the Dragons last season and averaged 14.5 points a game. Phillip, a 6-6 forward from Brooklyn, averaged 2.9 points and 3.1 rebounds coming off the bench in 31 games.

A Drexel spokeswoman said the school would release a statement Monday afternoon.

SAN ANTONIO — Receiver Dez Bryant has done everything right on the field during the first two days of Dallas Cowboys training camp, but he refuses to participate in an NFL rite of passage.

According to the rookie first-round pick, Roy Williams and the other veteran receivers can carry their own shoulder pads after practice.

Dez Bryant wouldn’t take part in innocent rookie hazing at the hands of Roy Williams. ESPN.com’s Matt Mosley is amused, but how will Bryant’s Cowboys teammates react?

Williams gave his pads to Bryant after Sunday’s morning practice, but Bryant declined to carry them. Williams threatened to go to “step two” when talking to reporters.

“I’m not doing it,” Bryant said. “I feel like I was drafted to play football, not carry another player’s pads.”

“If I was a free agent, it would still be the same thing. I just feel like I’m here to play football. I’m here to try to help win a championship, not carry someone’s pads. I’m saying that out of no disrespect to [anyone].”

It’s a common duty for rookies, who typically get some sort of hazing. Bill Parcells used to make first-round picks bring him water during breaks in practice. The Cowboys’ rookie offensive linemen are given awful haircuts by the veterans at some point during each training camp.

“Everybody has to go through it,” Williams said. “I had to go through it. No matter if you’re a No. 1 pick or the 7,000th pick, you’ve still got to do something when you’re a rookie.

“I carried pads. I paid for dinners. I paid for lunches. I did everything I was supposed to do, because I didn’t want to be that guy.”
