Lights may be key in Detroit officer’s death

The glow from flashlights inside a vacant home initiated the chain of events that resulted in the May 3 shooting death of Detroit Police Officer Brian Huff.

And a neighbor’s report of more than one flashlight is the reason investigators are examining the possibility that at least two intruders may have been inside the duplex prior to the shooting that also wounded four Detroit police officers, according to a police source.

“No one has said they saw a second person in the house,” the person familiar with the investigation said Wednesday about the other officers who surrounded the home on Schoenherr, near Edmore just south of 8 Mile, about 3:40 a.m. “That doesn’t mean that there couldn’t have been. He could have got out when all hell broke loose.”

The police source also said no flashlights were recovered inside.

That police source and another department source also familiar with the case said that a man arrested on traffic violations shortly after the shooting was to be questioned in the case.

Pointed out by another acquaintance of 25-year-old shooting suspect Jason Gibson, that man is still in custody while police try to determine whether he may have been in the house before the shooting or fled after gunfire broke out, one police source said.

So far, Gibson alone faces 18 charges that could land him behind bars for life, including charges of premeditated murder in the death of Huff, 42, a 12-year Detroit Police Department veteran.

When announcing the charges against Gibson on Tuesday, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy declined to comment on whether there were any other suspects.

Gibson was released Wednesday from St. John Hospital & Medical Center in Detroit, where he was being treated for a gunshot wound to the backside.

He is to face a preliminary exam May 24.
