There are questions over a photo of a Detroit Police officer. It was posted on the internet, and it appears that he was sleeping on the job. The comments under the picture have been less than friendly about the city of Detroit.
You can not deny it. The picture does not look good and neither does the caption “This is how they do it in the D”. However, we talked to officers off-camera who work with him every single day. They say he is a good police officer, and this is just a bad situation.
“Everybody that works for the Detroit Police Department is expected to give eight hours, work for eight hours pay, and we expect it of everybody, but again we want to make sure first that we understand and know to best of our ability what the circumstances were behind the photograph,” said Detroit Police 2nd Deputy Chief John Roach.
Someone caught the cop on camera in his cruiser with his eyes closed. Now, he has some explaining to do.
He is a Detroit Police patrol officer in the Eighth Precinct, but in the photo it appears he is catching some shut eye while on the clock instead of catching crooks.
“What we need to do is we need to find out whether or not this is something that really looks bad or it is bad. We don’t know exactly what the scenario behind the photo is, and it’s up to us, as we would with anybody, to give this person a fair process,” Roach said.
The Detroit Police Department found out about the photograph along with hundreds of thousands of other people because the picture wound up on the World Wide Web, and the comments coming from lots of the bloggers are brutal. Some say the officer should be fired and deserves whatever he gets. Others just took the opportunity to dog the police department and the city of Detroit.
“Some folks have already made up their minds. We can’t allow ourselves to do that. We have to conduct an impartial investigation, and what I can tell you is that there is an awful lot of good that goes on in (the) Detroit Police Department everyday,” said Roach.
Despite the photo, many of his fellow officers say he is a stand-up guy and a great cop, who gets guns and drugs off the streets. He works double shifts, has never been in trouble and does whatever is asked of him. They say he is a tremendous asset to his department and hope that does not go unnoticed.
“It doesn’t look good, but again I caution folks to wait until we have a chance to do the investigation, and trust me, if the investigation… ferrets out that it was some bad behavior, then we will deal with it accordingly,” Roach said. “We have no problem with issuing discipline if it’s warranted, but we have no problem clearing somebody if that’s warranted, as well.”
Internal Affairs is handling the case. They expect to have a statement from the officer telling his side of the story in the next few days.
