featured_kwamlastxx_11208Ex-Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick may have his eyes set on a get-out-of-jail free card that’s in the works, but the government is looking to yank it away.

An online fund-raising effort to free Kilpatrick from prison has caught the attention of the U.S. Attorney’s Office, which says it is looking into the fund — overseen by the ex-mayor’s mother — to determine whether the money is up for grabs.

Given that Kilpatrick owes millions in restitution to the City of Detroit, the government says, anything Kilpatrick has a financial interest in is subject to seizure.

And if the fund’s website is any indication, the government says, Kilpatrick is definitely interested in this pot of money, which, according to his mother, is filling up.

The website, which went up last fall, says all donors will remain confidential, and that there’s “no legal limit” to how much they want to give.

In addition to prison time, Kilpatrick was ordered to pay $4.3 million in restitution to the City of Detroit. He also still owes more than $800,000 in restitution stemming from the text message scandal.
