DETROIT, Oct. 24, 2013 – With just two days left to apply, the Detroit Fire Department has received more than 1,600 applications from individuals interested in beginning their training to be a firefighter in the city. This is first time since 2003 that the DFD has held open hiring for the force.
Applications will continue to be accepted online until 11:59 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26. Interested individuals can apply at www.detroitmi.gov by clicking “Employment” tab and then select the “Job Openings for All Applicants” link, click “Fire Fighter” and follow the online directions.
“I am very excited about the tremendous response from the men and women who want to join the ranks of the Detroit Fire Department,” Detroit Fire Commissioner Donald Austin said. “DFD firefighters are committed to the city and care deeply about helping make our neighborhoods safer and thriving places to live and own a business.”
The pay range for a Detroit firefighter at entry level is $29,300 with top pay at $47,900.
- Be at least 18 years of age;
- High school diploma or GED
- Valid Michigan drivers’ license
- Successful completion of the Candidate Physical Ability Test at the time of interview.
After completing the online application process, qualified candidates must take and pass a written exam, complete a CPAT, sit for a department interview and undergo a personal background investigation. Candidates who successfully complete this process will be placed on an eligibility list from which new hires will be selected. Candidates who have been Detroit city residents for at least 1 year will receive 15 bonus points to their application score; veterans receive an additional 5 points.
