From the Detroit Free Press:
University of Michigan’s freshman student body this year has fewer African Americans, but nonwhite students overall make up about the same percentage as last year, according to numbers released Tuesday.
A boost in Asian Americans and other minority students helped keep the number of nonwhite students at about 23%. The numbers do not include international students.
Still, the concern for George Washington, an attorney for the group By All Means Necessary, is the continuing drop in African-American first-year students — dwindling from a recent high of 443 in 2005 to 290 this year. First-year enrollment, meanwhile, dropped just 26 students to 5,850.
“We’re disturbed by the trend. It’s a constant downward track,” he said.
