Detroit Branch NAACP Celebrates its Centennial with a “Salute to Leadership”

The Detroit Branch NAACP will celebrate its Centennial with a "Salute to Leadership" that will honor all past and current Presidents and Executive
Directors/Secretaries and the unveiling of the Detroit Branch NAACP Centennial Exhibit that will be housed in the Charles H. Wright Museum of African
American History. 

Detroit Branch NAACP along with its Centennial Chairs Coca-Cola, DTE Energy Foundation, General Motors and United Auto Workers (UAW) will recognize
all the past Presidents and Executive Directors/Secretaries.  

Among those who will be honored are:

  o Rev. James E. Wadsworth, Jr. (President 1957-1963)
  o Thomas Turner  (President 1969-1970)
  o Attorney Elliot S. Hall  (President 1972-1975)
  o Dr. Betty Lackey (President 1981-1985)
  o Dr. Charles G. Adams  (President 1985-1987)
  o Dr. Arthur Johnson (President 1987-1993 and Executive Secretary 1950-1964)
  o Col. William Penn (Executive Secretary 1969-1974)
  o Joseph Madison (Executive Secretary 1974 -1977)
  o Dr. Tyronne Tillery (Executive Director 1988)
  o Honorable JoAnn Watson (Executive Director 1990-1997)
  o Atty. John E. Johnson Jr. (Executive Director 1997-2000)
  o Heaster Wheeler (Executive Director 2000-2011)

The Detroit Branch NAACP exhibit "A Very Present Force: Celebrating A Century
with the Detroit Branch NAACP" will be at the museum from November 14, 2012,
until March 3, 2013.  Organized into three sections, A Very Present Force
explores the Detroit Branch NAACP's rich local history while situating it
within the broader national and international struggle for civil rights.
