(WXYZ) – During a news conference Monday morning Detroit Mayor Dave Bing announced that Police Chief Ralph Godbee has submitted a letter stating he will retire effective immediately.
The announcement comes amidst a brewing sex scandal surrounding Chief Godbee’s alleged affair with a subordinate that made headlines last week.
Chief Godbee’s troubles began last weekend when Angelica Robinson, who works in the department’s internal affairs section, exposed their alleged affair on Twitter. Robinson tweeted angry messages about the chief who was in California at a conference.
Robinson reportedly believed he was there with another woman.
Mayor Bing told reporters that Chester Logan would become the city’s interim police chief while a search for a permanent replacement is conducted. Logan has 38 years of experience on Detroit’s police force. Last week, he was announced as the person who would take Ralph Godbee’s place during a 30-day suspension.
Logan spoke Monday morning praising Chief Godbee’s leadership of the department, but also noting, “There is much more that needs to be done.”
“I’m humbled. I’m honored,” said the interim chief. “I’m ready to roll up my sleeves. I’ll start today,” Logan said.
The mayor said Monday that an executive search firm would be used to find a new chief for the Detroit Police Department. He noted that the next chief would be appointed by the mayor but would also be subject to City Council approval.
Chief Godbee arrived home from the conference Wednesday. He had no comment for the team of reporters that greeted him as he stepped off the plane.
Mayor Bing put Godbee on a 30-day suspension.
