Americans trust local government, fear feds

American dissatisfaction with the federal government is at a record high. According to Gallup, 81% of Americans are dissatisfied with the way the nation is being governed, 57% have no confidence in the federal government to solve domestic problems, and 49% believe the federal government has become so large and powerful that it poses an immediate threat to the rights and freedoms of ordinary citizens.

But these negative views of the federal government are not being extended to local and state governments. According to Gallup, 68% of Americans have trust and confidence in their local government, and 57% feel the same way about their state government. The confidence level in local government is virtually identical to the 67% of Americans who said they trusted local governments in 1997. Americans’ confidence in state government has actually risen six points, from 51, since 2010.

Americans continued faith in their local and state governments, while their confidence in the federal government tanks, is a major barrier to President Obama’s agenda.
