Concerned Citizens Outraged! State Leaders Forfeit Federal Funds, Cripple Consumer Spending, and Create Chaos in Michigan Communities
With less than six weeks to go before thousands of Michigan families with children are expected to lose their cash assistance grants, the Michigan legislature is expected to finalize House Bills 4409 and 4410 this week and cut an estimated 12, 600 families from cash assistance while simultaneously failing to file an application for federal funds for the state’s Unemployment Insurance system.
“While forfeiting needed federal dollars our legislative leaders and administration will cripple the life chances of 25,000 children, 12, 600 families and already troubled communities”, said D. Alexander Bullock, president of Rainbow PUSH Detroit Chapter.“Additionally, we cannot find enough information to prepare for the fallout of these policies and don’t have a clear idea how many more homeless children this legislation will create.”
Citizens are calling on the Governor to reconsider this policy. In addition to sending the Governor a letter, Rainbow PUSH Detroit has planned a town hall meeting on Thursday, August 25, 2011, at IBEW Local 58 1358 Abbott at 7 PM in Detroit, in order to educate and activate citizens to fight these measures.
