DETROIT — A Detroit teen was found guilty of second-degree murder for a fatal shooting that occurred outside a city recreation center.

Tremaine Davis’ conviction comes one day after his mother, Tarranisha Davis, was found guilty of second-degree murder as well.

Prosecutors said 35-year-old Davis drove her son to the Considine Little Rock Family Life Center on Oct. 8 and opened the hood of her vehicle where he then retrieved a hidden revolver.

Four shots were fired and one struck 19-year-old Demitry Jackson in the head, killing him.

Prosecutors said Jackson was an innocent bystander who had gone to the center to play basketball.

A jury found Tarranisha Davis guilty, but her son underwent a bench trial before Wayne County Circuit Court Daniel Ryan.

During opening statements, it was argued that Tarranisha Davis’ actions directly influenced Jackson’s death.

“She made her son come back to the scene, she armed him, she prodded him,” prosecutor Lisa Lindsey said. “Just like a gun when you pull the trigger, he fired.”

Investigators said they believe Tremaine Davis has been involved in a fight at the center earlier in the day, and had been punched in the face.

The first witness called to the stand was Jackson’s father, who broke down in tears as he described his experience of identifying his son at the morgue.

The defense argued that there was plenty of unreasonable doubt regarding Tarranisha Davis’ intent in her actions, in addition to a lack of evidence and testimony.

“It is so salacious, it’s so titillating to say a mother and a son committed a crime that it turns people off immediately,” said defense attorney Lillian Diallo. “If you dislike her, I’m sorry, but you should be fair and listen to the evidence.”

Both mother and son are scheduled to be sentenced in early March.
