Get To Know Mosaic

A brief introduction to and history of the Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit.
Founded by Rick Sperling in 1992, Mosaic was born out of a need to fill the gaps in arts education in metropolitan Detroit schools while providing an artistic home for young actors, singers and stage technicians.
Each year Mosaic provides no-cost, intensive acting and vocal training and performance opportunities for more than 500 young artists, ages 7 – 18 from metropolitan Detroit area schools. Mosaic has trained over 7,200 Detroit youth in its 18 year history.
Mosaic’s free and accessible performing arts training programs regularly bring together young people of diverse racial, ethnic, religious and economic backgrounds and provide an important haven for youth to develop and acheive their full potential.

Did You Know?

Mosaic was selected by the National Endowment for the Arts and the President’s Committee on Arts and Humanities for the ‘Coming Up Taller’ award as one of the top youth arts programs in the nation.
Mosaic’s young artists have toured their critically-acclaimed all-teen performances to Europe, Asia, Africa, 25 states throughout the U.S., the White House and The Kennedy Center.
Despite often devastating economic and social challenges, over 95% of Mosaic alumni graduate from high school and go on to college, dramatically above the city of Detroit’s on-time graduation rate.
